Creating a Life in Balance
Many people, including medical professionals, believe or act on the premise that depression, which prevents life from being full and engaging, is the result of a chemical imbalance in the brain; hence the application of medication to bring it into balance.
Some studies (not all) would support this remedy to the debilitating consequences of depression. However, evidence to support CBT as an effective intervention to depression continues to be compelling and compares favourably for many levels of depression in the absence of medication. In addition to being an effective intervention for the first episode of depression, CBT is clearly advantageous with respect to having developed tools, strategies and an understanding of depression when another episode of depression presents itself – which is a very common occurrence.
Consider a new notion as being out of balance. From a CBT perspective, depression often presents itself when life is out of balance. The significant question is: “What would balance look like in your life?” In some respects, the depression experience may be a gift as it is a chance to clarify and set in motion a life in balance in response to the demands for continuing to develop personally.
A suggestion might be to look at the following list of typical areas of life. Consider which of these reflect what you value in your own life. Don’t be lead by traditions or expectations of others (no ‘shoulds’); make your selection connected to your current life – that is, don’t base your selection on old stories.
- Physical Health and self-care
- Fun, Recreation, Hobbies
- Healthy Relationships/Friendships
- Spirituality
- Meaningful Work
- Social or community engagements
Personalize the order of your selection that reflects what would allow you to live your best life. Spend some time in thoughtful engagement with each area as you ask yourself: “What would be happening in my life if this area was ‘in balance’?” “What would this ‘look like’?” It might be wise to write out these elaborated statements. As you move forward in your daily/weekly life, make observations on how each of these statements are reflective of your image of balance.
By doing this on a regular basis, you are insulating yourself against subsequent depression as you live your best life.
Just a Thought …
