We all look for certainty in life … but it really is an illusion.
Kim noticed some sensations in her body that frightened her. They were random and intermittent. She sought medical explanations, and, after some tests, her doctor said that whatever sensations she experienced, no physical issues were present to explain them. He suggested she continue to monitor them and if there was a change to make another appointment.
She was not convinced her doctor was certain she was healthy. Kim sought a second opinion which resulted in more extensive testing. After a period of investigation with a second doctor, it was also concluded that there was no physical evidence to explain the sensations.
Over the course of the next few months, Kim visited the emergency room with similar symptoms. No physical symptoms could explain the sensations.
One emergency room doctor offered these words: “It is possible that something could be wrong but, as with all experiences of living, anything is possible. We live with an understanding of the probability of a good outcome.” He shared that, given the investigations and all the tests, the probability was very high that the sensations are not negative or threatening to her health.
He went on to say: “I will have to get off this chair at the conclusion of our conversation and it is possible that I could trip and hurt myself. It is possible- but what allows me to move off this chair and engage in life is the high probability that I will be able to move safely from this chair.”
Living life with a healthy sense of uncertainty is living life with a reserve of energy to confront any unexpected turn in the road.
Just a thought…
